The University of Tennessee (UT) System announced on Monday that it had joined an elite group of 14 public university systems with more than one university with R1 status.
The good news came from UT President Randy Boyd who forwarded an email from Peter Buckley, Chancellor of the UT Health Science Center in Memphis, who noted the the prestigious R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
“This honor underscores the pivotal role of research to our mission and highlights our enduring commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation,” Buckley wrote. “It also represents a significant strength that UT Health Science Center brings to the innovation economy of the state of Tennessee through our campuses in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville.”
Buckley added that Memphis is now one of only six cities in the country that are home to two R1-designated public universities, the other being the University of Memphis.
