Two Tennessee universities rank high for articles published in scientific journals
Vanderbilt University placed #36 among its U.S. peers, while the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) was #58 nationally.
The recently released Leiden Ranking, produced by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands, ranks universities by articles published in scientific journals. The bibliographic database Web of Science is the primary source of the journal data.
How did the schools in the expanded Southeastern Conference (SEC) do in terms of published articles from 2019 to 2022? Well, for starters, two of the Tennessee-based universities were in the top six among the 16 institutions. Vanderbilt University placed #36 among its U.S. peers, good for fourth place in the SEC, while the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) was #58 nationally and sixth among SEC universities. Ironically, the UT Health Science Center in Memphis is listed separately – #150 overall in the U.S. If its publications and those of UTK had been combined, UT as a whole would have come in at #43.
The other SEC schools were ranked as follows:
- #10 – University of Florida;
- #20 – Texas A&M University;
- #29 – University of Texas at Austin;
- #54 – University of Georgia;
- #61 – University of Kentucky;
- #71 – University of Missouri;
- #78 – University of Oklahoma;
- #83 – University of South Carolina;
- #94 – Louisiana State University;
- #96 – Auburn University;
- #110 – University of Alabama;
- #120 – University of Arkansas;
- #122 – University of Mississippi; and
- #124 – Mississippi State University.
The University of Memphis, a non-SEC member, was ranked #175.
The Centre, which ranked 206 U.S. universities, studies scientific research and its connections to technology, innovation, and society. Its research, bibliometric and scientometric tools, and evaluation expertise provide a solid basis for supporting research assessment and strategic decision-making and for developing science policy.
