Tennessee has fourth lowest tax burden in the country

That's according to the 2025 Tax Burden by State report from WalletHub.

With Tax Day just around the corner on April 15, the personal finance website WalletHub has released its 2025 Tax Burden by State report, and Tennessee has the fourth lowest tax burden among the 50 states in two categories – overall tax burden (6.38 percent) and property tax burden (1.64 percent). The Volunteer State ranks #43 in terms of individual income tax burden (o.0 percent). Conversely, Tennessee ranks #7 in total sales and excise tax burden.

What are the top five states in terms of tax burden? New York (#2) and California (#4) would not be hard to guess. Hawaii ranks as the most tax-heavy state in the country, and the others in the top five are Vermont (#3) and Maine (#5).

Among Southeastern states, Mississippi is #19 in terms of tax burden followed by Louisiana (#21), Kentucky (#22), Arkansas (#29), Georgia (#31), South Carolina (#36), Alabama (#37), and Florida (#45).
