From Research Triangle Park, NC:
Public health officials at the federal and state levels have called for a better way to measure, predict, and adjust for social factors in health care and population health.
In response to that need, the Research Triangle Institute, better known as RTI International, has announced that its RTI RarityTM tool is now available for the public to access. It takes an “artificially intelligent” approach to inform decisions concerning community-level social, behavioral, environmental, and economic factors for quality health care. By curating a national database of more than 200 area-level social determinants of health (SDoH) measures within 10 domains at the Census tract, ZIP code, and county levels across the U.S., the RTI Rarity tool provides high-resolution insights into factors that strongly influence health outcomes.
More information and a link to accessing the database can be found here.
From Birmingham, AL:
An idea born in Texas when a family member was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes evolved into a healthtech start-up that now calls the Magic City home, and it is all because of an accelerator program.
Greens began as a texting service and app focused on diabetic teenagers from vulnerable populations, offering culturally focused meal plans to help make it easier to maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Founded in Houston by Kehlin Swain, Isis Ashford, and Dr. Jaylen James, the company first came to Birmingham to complete Prosper’s 12-week HealthTech Accelerator. The founders made the decision to relocate Greens after completing the program, believing Birmingham to be an ideal location to continue accelerating their success.

Here’s an interesting statistic for readers. More than 127 million people, 40 percent of the population, live in America’s coastal communities where rising seas and more frequent, intense coastal storms are challenging convention.
In response to that fact, there’s a growing workforce of entrepreneurs tapping into what proponents and practitioners call the blue economy, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) is right in the mix. Since 2020, CIE has been ramping up a program to promote blue economic-driven initiatives.
In 2022, the Center served 236 entrepreneurs, who, in turn, created 50 jobs and raised $25 million.
