North Carolina Innovation Council hires Executive Director, while Innovate Orlando is seeking a new leader.

From Charlotte, NC:

Charlotte Inno reports that the North Carolina Innovation Council has hired an Executive Director to oversee its regulatory sandbox program designed for financial and insurance companies. Victoria Avramovic, who has a rich and varied background working in the Charlotte region, will serve as the Council’s first leader.

The Council is empowered to set standards, principles, guidelines, and policy priorities for the types of innovations that the regulatory sandbox program will support. The Council is also responsible for admission into the regulatory sandbox program and for assigning selected participants to the applicable State agency.

Established by SESSION LAW 2021-166, the Council is permitted to allow a person or entity to temporarily test an innovative financial or insurance product or service and make it available to consumers on a limited basis without being subject to certain licensing or other regulatory obligations imposed under applicable State law.

From Baton Rouge, LA:

Applications have opened for the 2024 Diversity in Entrepreneurship Initiative, a Louisiana Economic Development program targeting accelerated business growth for minority- and women-owned second-stage companies.

The initiative, a partnership with the Michigan-based Edward Lowe Foundation, aims to empower minority- and women-owned businesses by providing them with valuable resources to expand their businesses and support as they face hurdles.

Second-stage Louisiana companies with five to 99 employees and annual revenue of $600,000 to $50 million are eligible for consideration. The program includes an intensive, three-day virtual retreat, three monthly roundtables and a customized strategic research engagement for participants.

Since its launch in 2021, more than 35 minority- and women-owned Louisiana businesses have graduated from the initiative.

Applications will be accepted through September 30 on LED’s website.

From New Orleans, LA:

The New Orleans BioInnovation Center will host a global pitch competition in partnership with BARDA DRIVe that focuses on promoting access and equity in health security. Start-ups from around the world will be competing for more than $100,000 in prizes, with a focus on innovative technologies such as flexible therapeutic platforms, broad-spectrum antimicrobials, and digital health tools for preparedness and response.

The competition will be held October 31 at the BioInnovation Center.

From Orlando, FL:

With the search process officially underway, Innovate Orlando hopes the nonprofit will find a new Chief Executive Officer soon to succeed David Adelson who announced in late July he will step down from his position with the organization he founded. According to a report published in Orlando Inno, the new leader will be tasked with continuing the organization’s mission and unlocking the potential for greater collaboration and alignment within the local tech industry, building on the foundation Adelson laid to elevate the region as a global tech hub.

“In retirement, I am looking forward to traveling, spending more time with my family, and exploring new hobbies that I have always been passionate about,” wrote Adelson in a letter sent to his organization’s email subscribers. “This new chapter is an exciting opportunity for personal growth and rejuvenation.”

From Durham, NC:

Triangle Inno reports that the First Flight Venture Center has a plan to score even more investment from India, specifically in the agtech sector. That will occur at First Flight launches its new India Wingspan initiative which will bring 10 Indian agriculture companies to First Flight, with the eventual goal of enticing them to invest in the region. Companies from India have invested more than $1 billion in the state over the past 10 years, according to the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina.
