Southeast Shoutouts | Economic Development Partnership of Alabama names new President

InspireMD Inc., developer of the CGuard™ Embolic Prevention Stent System, is establishing its global headquarters in Miami.

From Birmingham, AL:

The Board of Directors of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA) has selected its next President. Miller Girvin, currently serving as the organization’s Chief Operations Officer, will succeed Greg Barker, who will step down as EDPA’s president at the end of the year, after more than four years at the organization’s helm.

She brings a wealth of experience in economic development, leadership, and community engagement. Born and raised in Birmingham, Girvin joined EDPA in 2021 and has been instrumental in facilitating innovation and entrepreneurial growth across Alabama. Girvin’s prior leadership in the private entrepreneurial ecosystem as Chief Executive Officer of the Alabama Capital Network, combined with the past four years of focus on growing EDPA’s key innovation and talent retention initiatives, and her contributions to Governor Ivey’s Innovate Alabama Commission have positioned her as a key advocate for Alabama’s business and start-up ecosystem.

From Huntsville, AL:

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology has announced that Dr. Florencia Behn will become the organization’s new Vice President for Research Administration and Development on November 1. She has been the Senior Director of Research Affairs at HudsonAlpha, where she led HudsonAlpha’s sponsored projects and helped secure grant funding for existing and emerging research programs. Prior to several roles in research affairs, she was a research scientist in the Myers Lab.

Starting in 2025, Dr. Behn will also oversee HudsonAlpha’s Strategic Software and Greenhouse teams, continuing their efforts supporting the scientific needs of HudsonAlpha’s Faculty. She will continue to provide strategic oversight for research communications and the HudsonAlpha Trainee Program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at the institute.

From Miami, FL

InspireMD Inc., developer of the CGuard™ Embolic Prevention Stent System (EPS) for the prevention of stroke, has announced the establishment of its global headquarters in Miami. The new facility will ideally position the company to support the anticipated U.S. launch and commercialization of the CGuard Prime carotid stent system in the first half of 2025, if approved.

“The establishment of our new headquarters location in the U.S. represents a significant step as we prepare for potential FDA approval of CGuard Prime in the first half of next year,” said Marvin Slosman, Chief Executive Officer of InspireMD. “Together with the ongoing build-out of world-class commercial and operational teams and supporting infrastructure, our new U.S.-based headquarters will be key to driving long-term growth and serving the U.S. market while creating sustained shareholder value.”

On September 16, InspireMD announced that the company had submitted the final module of its Premarket Authorization (PMA) application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administratio for the CGuard Prime carotid stent system.

From Charleston, SC:

Chef Cynthia Wong and and her husband, John David Harmon,  will pitch their Charleston-based dessert business named Life Raft Treats to investors during this week’s edition of ABC’s “Shark Tank.” The episode airs at 8 p.m. EDT on October 25.

According to an article in The Charleston Post and Courier, Wong is a six-time James Beard semifinalist. The business is best known for its buckets of Not Fried Chicken Ice Cream — a combination of waffle ice cream, a chocolate-covered cookie “bone,” and white chocolate and Corn Flakes coating that looks nearly identical to a fried chicken drumstick.
