Southeast Shoutouts | Atlanta Tech Week underway

The third annual Grep-a-palooza was the best-attended version of the event to date with some 250 people packing the Durham Convention Center.

From Atlanta, GA:

At last report, there were 78 events scheduled during this year’s edition of Atlanta Tech Week that started on Sunday and continues through this Saturday.

The annual event brings together the local technology ecosystem, fostering collaboration and creating a nurturing environment for all participants. By promoting knowledge sharing, networking, and idea exchange, this event paves the way for Atlanta to flourish as a hub of technological innovation and opportunity.

The 78 events can be found at this link.

From Durham, NC:

The third annual Grep-a-palooza was the best-attended version of the event to date with some 250 people packing the Durham Convention Center. Guests enjoyed a full day packed with events, including panel discussions, a “Birds of a Feather” lunch, networking breaks, and the GrepTank start-up pitch competition.

“Our collection of panelists, pitchers, and competition judges was comprised of a veritable who’s-who from the Triangle start-up community, and our two keynote speakers — Levitate and ShareFile Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jes Lipson, and Pryon Founder and CEO Igor Jablokov — delivered fascinating insights via ‘fireside chats’ with GrepBeat’s own Pete McEntegart,” GrepBeat wrote in an email recapping the daylong event.

Another from Durham, NC:

Durham’s Restor3d, which is making 3D-printed orthopedic implants, has raised $55 million from investors to fuel its growth. The investment round was led by Denver-based Summers Value Partners. Restor3d also completed $15 million in debt financing led by Trinity Capital of Phoenix.

The company said it plans to use the proceeds to introduce new patient-specific implant systems for total ankle and shoulder replacements and to upgrade its printing technology. It also plans to add new software and design automation systems and use some of the money to educate surgeons.

“With this capital, we can accelerate our efforts to transform orthopedic care through 3D-printed personalized implants,” said CEO Kurt Jacobus in a statement. “We are eager to maximize our impact on patient outcomes and continue to advance orthopedic care.”

Restor3d, which was spun out of Duke University in 2017, received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval in April 2023 for an ankle replacement. The company has multiple FDA product clearances that span lower extremity, upper extremity, spine, and trauma.

From Tampa, FL:

Tampa Bay Inno reports that a start-up that officially expanded into Tampa earlier this year is now competing in the Startup World Cup for a $1 million investment from Silicon Valley-based Pegasus Tech Ventures.

The event is a global competition featuring tens of thousands of attendees and will happen in California on October 4, according to its website.

GuardianSat, which moved to Tampa Bay in March, won a pitch competition from Harvard University’s alumni network, which moved the start-up forward to the semifinals in a global competition. It relocated to the region following its acceptance into the University of South Florida’s Tampa Bay Technology Incubator, an incubator program for tech and science-based start-ups in the region.

As the name implies, the company is building satellite protection technology.

From Orlando, FL:

The Florida Venture Forum, Florida’s largest statewide support organization for investors and entrepreneurs, has announced the seven recipients of $300,000 in award dollars and investment during its 16th annual Early Stage Venture Conference in Orlando.

The conference also included the Space Florida AeroTech Summit, featuring presenters and programming relevant to the space and aerospace industries, and the Forum’s Statewide Collegiate Start-up Competition, during which start-up teams from Florida colleges and universities competed for award dollars. A panel of judges evaluated each eligible company’s presentation and supporting materials.
