Reinhold Mann named Vice Chancellor for Research at UT Chattanooga
He's moving up from Deputy Vice Chancellor after serving more nearly 25 years at three national laboratories.
A former colleague during my second career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been named Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC).
Dr. Reinhold Mann, who has been serving as Deputy Vice Chancellor since July 2018, will succeed Dr. Joanne Romagni effective January 1, 2024, for a period of two years. She has decided to leave that position and return to the faculty as a professor in the Department of Biology, Geology and Environmental Science.
“Since Dr. Romagni joined UTC in 2015 as the University’s first Vice Chancellor for Research, sponsored project award dollars have increased 76 percent, research and development expenditures have increased 105 percent, UTC has established a presence in the Edney Building in downtown Chattanooga’s Innovation District and launched the UTC Research Institute on campus,” said Chancellor Steven R. Angle.
Mann spent much of his career at three U.S. Department of Energy facilities. After directing ORNL’s Life Sciences Division for four years, he was Chief Research Officer and Associate Laboratory Director at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for a little more than two years before returning to ORNL as Associate Laboratory Director for Biological and Environmental Research. Functions currently overseen by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research will remain unchanged. The Graduate School functions have reported to the Office of the Provost and will continue to do so, with increased emphasis on growing enrollment and capacity as stated in the 2020-2025 strategic plan. Dr. Ethan Carver will continue to support Graduate Studies as Interim Dean. Next steps will be based on recommendations from a study that was completed by the Office of Research.
