ORNL joins nine other national labs in digital twins initiative

The effort will support the new Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Research with Twins USA (SMART USA) Institute.

Over the holidays, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that Oak Ridge National Laboratory would join with nine other national labs to establish the Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Research with Twins USA (SMART USA) Institute, a manufacturing institute intended to support domestic semiconductor production through advanced digital twin technology.

SMART USA will leverage the digital twin, or virtual copy, artificial intelligence (AI), and computational research capabilities of DOE’s national laboratory complex. Digital twins are virtual representations of real-world systems that are used to improve domestic semiconductor design, manufacturing, advanced packaging, assembly, and test processes. SMART USA will join an existing network of 17 institutes designed to increase U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and promote a robust research and development infrastructure.

This announcement highlights the convergence of several important pillars of critical and emerging technology for DOE: artificial intelligence, microelectronics, and digital twins.

The other participating national labs are Argonne, Brookhaven, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Idaho, National Renewable Energy, Pacific Northwest, Princeton Plasma Physics, Sandia, and SLAC National Accelerator. The 10 will be coordinated by Idaho National Lab’s Chief Digital Officer.
