New report ranks four TN cities in top 100 for tech innovation

By comparison, North Carolina placed 10 on the list.

A new report from the North Carolina Technology Association has 10 Tar Heel State cities among the top 110 nationally for technology innovation. That compares with Tennessee which placed four on the list.

Not surprisingly, the highest-ranked city in the Volunteer State was Nashville at #32 followed by Knoxville (#57), Memphis (#84), and Chattanooga (#86). Topping the national list were Austin, TX (#1); San Jose, CA (#2); San Francisco (#3); Boston (#4); and Seattle (#5).

North Carolina followed with two cities – Durham (#6) and Raleigh (#7). Other Tar Heel cities and their rankings were:

  • Charlotte (#27);
  • Wilmington (#51);
  • Greenville (#74);
  • Winston-Salem (#80);
  • Greensboro (#85);
  •  Asheville (#91);
  • Fayetteville (#94); and
  • Hickory (#100).

The study was completed by Economic Leadership LLC, a consulting firm led by Ted Abernathy, former Executive Director of the now defunct Southern Growth Policies Board. The data were evaluated based on three key metrics: tech talent supply, tech talent demand, and innovation.
