New Jersey awards more than $2.7 million to 11 cleantech start-ups

It's the second round of a pilot program to accelerate the commercialization and deployment of innovative clean energy technologies.

The New Jersey Commission on Science, Innovation, and Technology (CSIT) has awarded more than $2.7 million in grant funding to 11 New Jersey start-ups under Round Two of the Pilot Cleantech Demonstration Grant Program. The funding will support pilot demonstration projects from startup companies creating technologies that mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

“The innovative ideas of New Jersey entrepreneurs are essential to helping the state achieve its clean energy goals,” said CSIT Executive Director Judith Sheft. “Awardees under Round Two of the Pilot Clean Tech Demonstration Program are developing technologies that will address the carbon footprint of concrete, divert packaging waste from landfills, and the infrastructure needed to support the transition to electric vehicles, exemplifying New Jersey’s standing as a hub of innovation.”

The goal of the Pilot Program is to support New Jersey-based companies to accelerate the commercialization and deployment of innovative clean energy technologies by demonstrating capabilities in a real-world setting. Companies must be developing or testing clean technologies intended to avoid emissions of, or recapture, greenhouse gases and/or criteria pollutants, or to enable such avoidance or recapture.

The Pilot Program is for companies developing or testing clean technologies intended to avoid emissions of, or recapture, greenhouse gases and/or criteria pollutants, or to enable such avoidance or recapture in the following target areas:

  • Chemicals/Advance Materials;
  • Energy Distribution/Storage;
  • Energy Efficiency;
  • Energy Generation;
  • Green Buildings;
  • Transportation;
  • Waste Processing; and
  • Water and Agriculture

All Applicants for the program must be between a minimum technology development level of Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 (Applied Research) through TRL 8 (Integrated Pilot System Demonstrated), based on the Department of Energy definitions.
