New highs reached for venture capital investments
In an announcement released Friday, CB Insights reported that venture capital-backed companies in the U.S. raised nearly $130 billion last year, setting a record despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Other results included:
- While the investment total is up 14 percent from 2019, the number of deals is down 9 percent to 6,022.
- And so-called mega-rounds – deals that are $100 million or higher – also hit a record amount and number with $63 billion raised in 318 deals.
Separately, healthcare venture fundraising soared to $17 billion in 2020, a 57 percent increase over 2019’s record, according to Silicon Valley Bank. Investment in venture-backed companies also rose to a new high of $51 billion.
