Money isn’t everything | ‘In the Room’ series wraps up for 2024

When starting a business, it's important to prioritize the right things.

Over the past year, Gera Grinberg has offered a wealth of wisdom at the Knoxville Entrepreneur Center’s (KEC) “In the Room” series. His Thursday morning sessions have sparked plenty of laughter—and perhaps a few tears—as entrepreneurs gained insights into building and growing their businesses.

For the final session of 2024, the tables were turned as Grinberg took the hot seat for an “ask me anything” discussion. Entrepreneurs from across Knoxville seized the opportunity to pose their toughest questions to the man who usually challenges others with his own.

The questions ranged from technicalities about waivers and corporate structures to navigating the complexities of non-profit status. One key topic of conversation was the leading causes of startup failures.

“The biggest reason companies fail is because founders don’t take the time to understand who their customers are,” Grinberg explained. “Your customer base may not match your ideal vision—it’s anyone who wants to hire you or buy your services.”

Grinberg also touched on the dangers of early-stage greed. He referenced how Jeff Bezos built Amazon by initially keeping prices low to build loyalty before gradually increasing them.

“Can you endure short-term pain to reap long-term rewards?” Grinberg challenged the room.

In closing, Grinberg offered two powerful pieces of advice. First, he emphasized the importance of choosing the right life partner, noting that many legal issues in business stem from having an unsupportive spouse.

“The most important decision you will ever make is who you choose to spend the rest of your life with,” he said.

His second piece of advice was to prioritize experiences, dreams, and personal fulfillment over financial gain.

“Money isn’t everything,” Grinberg concluded.

Though nothing is set in stone, Grinberg alluded to the fact that he will return to the KEC and continue the popular sessions in 2025.
