eSpin Technologies, partners to receive up to $6.3 million from Department of Energy

The funding was part of $750 million announced for 52 projects to dramatically reduce the cost of clean hydrogen and reinforce America's global leadership in the growing clean hydrogen industry.

eSpin Technologies Inc. of Chattanooga has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to negotiate a project that could amount to as much as $6.3 million in federal funds.

According to an announcement this week from DOE, the project will develop and produce a novel separator employing nanofiber technology for liquid alkaline electrolyzers. Properties of the separator, such as thickness and mechanical strength, will be designed to enable high efficiency and durable operation of electrolyzers using low-cost materials. This project will support DOE performance targets while further developing a nascent U.S.-based supply chain for alkaline separator materials.

eSpin Technologies was founded in 1998 by Dr. Jayesh Doshi as an advanced research facility to commercialize nanofiber technology. He believed that nanofibers could make the world a better place. Today the company is a global leader in industrial scale nanofiber production. As envisioned at the beginning, eSpin Technologies produces the highest quality nanofiber-based media, including customized non-woven nanofiber rolls for filtration, critical cleaning and functional textiles.

The eSpin Technologies funding was part of $750 million announced for 52 projects across 24 states to dramatically reduce the cost of clean hydrogen and reinforce America’s global leadership in the growing clean hydrogen industry. Partners on the effort are Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Oregon, De Nora Technologies LLC, Teledyne Energy Systems Inc., and Aquahydrex.
