Bridging the gap between classroom and career with ETEC’s internship program

The schools are intentional to place students in a work-based learning experience that is aligned with their program of study.

One of the biggest issues in the Knoxville community is the workforce. How do we attract more qualified individuals to the region? How do we keep them? And, how can this community be more magnetic to young people?

The East Tennessee Economic Council (ETEC) has been running the school-to-industry talent bridging partnership for the last few years, with much success. So much so that the Anderson County Chmaber of Commerce has created a partnership with with schools, students, and companies to bridge the gap between the classroom and experience through internships.

Right now, ETEC is looking for companies that are interested in welcoming interns. Anderson, Knox, and Roane County companies are invited to participate. The program welcomes high school juniors and seniors from Oak Ridge High School, Anderson County High School, and Clinton High School; and, college students from Roane State Community College (RSCC) to participate in short, easy-to-manage internships.

  • Benefits to the company – A junior/senior high school or college student who is interested in your industry. You get to set the type of experience you want to provide, and the time spent at your place of business. It can be as simple as a job shadow experience, or they can complete a project.
  • Benefits to the student – Career and technical education credit at the high school or college level credit, and valuable experience in your industry that can influence future college and career paths. For high school students this experience will also count toward the new State of Tennessee Industry 4.0 diploma distinction. Additionally, the student will make $12-15 per hour.
