Dr. Uday Vaidya recognized at the 2024 Innovation Awards

The University of Tennessee Research Foundation hosted the annual Innovation Awards on the flagship campus in Knoxville.

In the past year, the University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF) has made strides in university research, commercialization, and practical applications. This year alone, several start-ups have spun out of the UT System, eight new technologies discovered by UT have been licensed for industry applications, and 21 research teams secured patents.

Additionally, UTRF helped with the grand opening of the Innovation South building at UT Research Park at Cherokee Farms, which is providing innovators with more wet lab spaces.

Of course, these accomplishments only scratch the surface of the impact made from UTRF’s efforts.

UT System President Randy Boyd welcomed attendees to the 2024 Innovation Awards, calling UT the “pinnacle of innovation and envy of the nation.”

UT, Knoxville’s Chancellor Donde Plowman agreed, pointing out that UTK’s status as a “flagship modern land-grant university” puts the school in a strong position to make meaningful change. She congratulated the dozens of innovators on campus who tirelessly work toward making our world a better place through research, innovation, and new technologies.

One of the most prominent innovators on campus, who also happens to be famous in the world of composites manufacturing is Dr. Uday Vaidya. He was named “Innovator of the Year” for the UT System due to his notable leadership in advanced composites and lightweight, high-performance materials. He is the UT/ORNL Governor’s Chair in Advanced Composites Manufacturing, a professor, mentor, and  Chief Technology Officer for the Institute for Advanced Composites and Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI). Through his roles, he has facilitated partnerships between academia, government, and corporations to tackle critical global challenges.

Dr. Vaidya has not only secured several patents and started several of his own companies, but he has encouraged a handful of his students to do the same with technologies they have developed under his leadership. Two primary examples of such students are Dr. Ryan Spencer, the Founder of ThermaMatrix and Vinit Chaudhary, the Founder of Aligned Composites Technology. Both founders were accepted into the highly-competitive “Innovation Crossroads” program at  Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Dr. Vaidya accepted his award on stage, thanking UT staff, colleagues, students, and his family – who traveled from India to celebrate his recognition.
