Johnson Architecture awards scholarships to six UTK Students
While the scholarship aims to address the underrepresentation of minorities in the field, it is open to all students, regardless of background, by federal and state laws.
Six promising students from the University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design have been named recipients of the Johnson Architecture Scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year. These scholarships, aimed at enhancing the students’ educational journeys, were awarded to Addison Cate, Abbie Coleman, Autumn Jackson, Lauren Nicholson, Owen Magowan, and Macy McDowell.
The Johnson Architecture Scholarship, established in 2021 by Knoxville-based Johnson Architecture, seeks to promote diversity within the profession while encouraging students to broaden their design horizons through international study experiences. This year’s recipients were selected based on their academic performance, leadership, and commitment to contributing fresh perspectives to the field of architecture.
“It is an honor to support the next generation of architects and designers who will lead the future of the industry,” said Daryl Johnson, Founder and President of Johnson Architecture. “Diverse backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints encourage us all to be better designers, and I hope the student experiences made possible by these scholarships spark inspiration for years to come.”
Johnson, a 1984 graduate of UT’s College of Architecture and Design, shares deep ties with the university, as do several key members of his firm.
This year’s recipients join a growing number of students who have benefited from the scholarship since its inception. Since 2021, seven additional students—Maya Markowicz, Isabella Woodward, Dexter Gladney Jr., DeMauri Mumphrey, Shannon Roisen-Reinoso, Alyssa Woodard, and Emmie Barnett—have been awarded the scholarship. They have used the funds to cover essential educational expenses, from textbooks and supplies to fees for architecture-focused trips, including museum and gallery visits in New York City.
Administered by the UT Scholarship Committee, the scholarship is available to students pursuing majors in the School of Architecture or School of Interior Architecture. Candidates must be third-year students or higher with a proven track record of academic success. While the scholarship aims to address the underrepresentation of minorities in the field, it is open to all students, regardless of background, by federal and state laws.
With the support of this scholarship, students are encouraged to expand their understanding of architecture beyond the classroom, embracing diverse cultures, ideas, and experiences that will ultimately shape them into more innovative and empathetic designers.
Through initiatives like the Johnson Architecture Scholarship, the firm continues to foster growth and inclusivity in a field that thrives on creativity and diverse perspectives.
