ORNL all-time leader in “R&D 100” awards

The lab has been recognized 218 times over the 45 years, an average of nearly five awards each year.

And the winner is Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

What did it win? The most number of awards in the 45 years since the “R&D 100” program that was launched 45 years ago. ORNL has been awarded 218 of the awards that are often referred to as the “Oscars of Innovation” and the “Nobel Prize of Engineering.”

National labs dominate the top ranks, demonstrating the staying power of consistent government investment in R&D. All of the top 10 organizations since 2010 are federally-backed entities. In the case of ORNL, that’s nearly five awards each year.

Frequently featured in R&D World, the magazine of the organization that makes the awards, ORNL’s expertise — and awards span diverse fields, from advanced materials and manufacturing processes to breakthroughs in computing and energy. For instance, their development of the “Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM-CI)” system in 2015 is an example of an ORNL project focused on large-scale 3D printing.
