Two Chattanooga start-ups competing for big bucks next month

It's the Venture Atlanta forum where a prize of $500,000 awaits the winner.

Four Tennessee-based companies were among the 88 selected to participate in this year’s Venture Atlanta event, and two of those start-ups – both part of the Brickyard portfolio companies – will compete for the $500,000 top prize during the “Start-up Showcase Live” event.

Scheduled for October 8 and 9 at The Woodruff Arts Center and Atlanta Symphony Hall, the multi-day event is expected to draw more than 1,500 attendees including 450 venture and angel funds from across the nation.

The Volunteer State participants who are competing for the $500,000 top prize are:

  • Allera which describes itself as providing software that creates a secure, paperless, and data-driven food industry; and
  • Shappi, a finalist for the “Early Innovator Award” at this month’s “Technology Excellence Awards” from the Chattanooga Technology Council. It connects consumers with Verified Travelers to deliver international products by renting the traveler’s luggage space.

Those who will be presenting during the event, but not competing for the top prize, are:

  • Station, also a part of Brickyard that is an all-in-one platform to monetize a podcast; and
  • EmpowerLocal Inc., based in Franklin, which is redefining the relationship between global/national advertisers and America’s growing number of independent, locally-focused media outlets.  Founded in 2020 by veteran local media entrepreneurs, the company’s team is dedicated to building new, innovative pathways for brands to invest in
local community media through high-impact ad experiences that connect authentically with local readers.

The $500,000 top prize is a joint sponsorship by Catalyst by WellstarFront Porch Venture PartnersKnoll VenturesLas Olas Venture Capital, and TiE Atlanta Angels.
