Crews install first solar panels on KCDC property for homeless veterans
In an effort to support regional clean energy initiatives, KCDC installed solar panels at Liberty Place.
On Monday, officials with Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation (KCDC) announced the installation of solar panels on the Liberty Place property in West Knoxville. This is the first KCDC property to include sustainable and alternative energy sources.
Liberty Place is KCDC’s first housing development specifically designated for homeless veterans, and it has plans to open in late 2024. The property has 32 units and will serve as a permanent supportive housing complex. Furthermore, the Department of Veterans Affairs will provide residents with on-site case management services, including coordination of medical services and community resources. All of the units have one bedroom and one bathroom.
The location of the property was carefully planned, as it neighbors the William C. Tallent Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Outpatient Clinic on Ray Mears Boulevard and is one mile from McNabb Center Military Services.
Funding for the solar panel project came directly from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
While the housing development is still under construction, the community was able to watch the solar panels be lifted onto the roof of the property.
