Tech Goes Home TN helps upscale the state’s workforce!

The goal of Tech Goes Home TN is to reduce the digital divide in Tennessee through classes, coaching, and career readiness.

Participants at the annual Digital Opportunities Summit last week walked into a breakout room to find a dozen adults sitting behind new laptop devices, ready to learn.

The Tech Goes Home Tennessee is an initiative that has been around for a long time. The goal is to help adults become acquainted with technology for the betterment of their lives, careers, and professional development.

Tech Goes Home TN is a Department of Human Services-approved, 15-hour training course designed to teach foundational technology skills, such as email navigation, internet search, presentation building, social media safety, scam prevention, security, media literacy, and other tools.

The goal of Tech Goes Home TN is to reduce the digital divide in Tennessee through training, technical assistance, targeted technical assistance, and coaching to achieve digital equity across the state.

Sammy Lowdermilk is the Program Director and has been for nearly a decade. In our previous reporting for teknovation.biz, dating back to 2015, Lowdermilk said technology education has always been a passion for him. He explained the many types of learners who have come through the program through the years.

“From the thousands of individuals we have worked with, our offices have met anxious learners, overeager students, disengaged attendees, adults with accessibility issues, skeptical internet users, bilingual students, and many other types,” Lowdermilk said. “It’s all about catering to each of those individual needs.”

The “students” at the Summit demonstrated a simulation of how the classes operate. They worked through a module about setting up safe passwords and the importance of security.

The simulation gave the audience an example of why these programs are so vital to the well-being of our communities.

On teknovation.biz, we frequently write about technology, innovation, and development across a variety of industries; however, as society becomes more advanced some Tennesseans who may have less access to technology are falling behind. It creates a significant” digital divide,” and may prevent these individuals from being able to obtain employment.

“We want to remove those barriers to make their lives easier,” Lowdermilk said upon completion of the simulation.
