TEAM TN submits its Letter of Intent to the National Science Foundation

Now, the waiting game begins as NSF evaluates LOIs and decides which ones to move forward.

TEAM TN, the statewide partnership comprised of more than 100 entities that was one of 44 recipients of a $1 million “NSF (National Science Foundation) Regional Innovation Engine Development Award,” has taken its next step, submitting a Letter of Intent to propose for the “big one.” That would be an up to $160 million award.

In the June newsletter, TEAM TN Chief Executive Officer Marc Gibson wrote, “I am pleased to announce that, on behalf of TEAM TN, we officially submitted the Letter of Intent (LOI) for the NSF Engines Type II award. This milestone would not have been possible without the dedicated support and hard work from each of you. Your contributions have been invaluable – thank you for your commitment, collaboration, and effort – both as individuals and as the organizations you represent. We look forward to the next steps in this exciting journey and continuing our work together to drive advanced mobility innovation, and create economic impact across the State of Tennessee.”

Now, it’s a matter of waiting to see if TEAM TN is invited to participate in the next round. That comes when partners are invited to submit a preliminary proposal, and NSF previously announced that those decisions would be announced by August 6. From there, NSF would again evaluate preliminary proposals and invite organizations to submit full proposals by February 11, 2025.

TEAM TN is an alliance of academics, industry, and technical societies, led by The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It seeks to place Tennessee in the vanguard of transportation electrification and digitization while reducing reliance on carbon-intensive energy sources, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and creating a more equitable transportation system. The goal is to create a self-sustaining innovation ecosystem where advanced industries and Tennessee communities thrive and will include a large and diverse array of innovation assets.
