Former UT First Lady Dies
Pat Johnson, widow of former University of Tennessee System President Joe Johnson, passed away peacefully on June 12. Her death came less than nine months after Dr. Joe’s passing on September 29, 2023. Pat Johnson’s obituary cited her work as a devoted member and Ladies Bible Class leader at Laurel Church of Christ, an advocate for mental health care in the greater Knoxville community, a loving mother to her children, Kent and Kelly, and a loving grandmother to her grandsons, Tucker and Luke Harlin.
“As her friends, family, and community members can attest, she had the gift of being a great listener in all facets of her life,” the tribute continued. “She also had the gift of mentoring many women in the greater Knoxville community.”
The Johnson family will hold a visitation on Thursday, June 27, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Friday, June 28, at 10 a.m. at Laurel Church of Christ. Services will take place on Friday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at the church.
PSCC gets state recognition
The Tennessee Board of Regents has awarded grants to three community colleges to foster innovation in corequisite learning support models to improve long-term student success. Corequisite learning support enables students to earn college credit while also receiving the additional support they need to be successful.
Pellissippi State Community College was selected through a competitive request for proposals (RFP) process for its launch of math learning communities, where students’ experiences in college-level and learning-support math courses are seamlessly integrated, with additional support from Learning Environment for Academic Resourcefulness (LEARN) Labs.
TBR is funding the pilot projects through a $230,000 grant the system was awarded by the Education Commission of the States’ Strong Start to Finish project.
Olympians in Knoxville
The U.S. Olympic Team Diving Trials are happening in Knoxville from June 17 through June 23.
America’s most talented divers will participate in the make-or-break event at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the University of Tennessee campus.
For divers to individually qualify for Team USA, they must finish either first or second after cumulative scores from the semifinal and finals rounds in Knoxville are tallied, according to Team USA.
The first session kicks off at 12:15 p.m. on Monday, June 17. Sessions continue until Sunday, June 23 with only one training day on Wednesday, June 19.
Doors will open one hour before the sessions begin.
Upcoming events
100 Knoxville – Sales expert Tavis Bailey will be leading a discussion on finding, nurturing, and closing sales. This lunch and learn event will be hosted at Knoxville Entrepreneur Center, and is part of a quarterly workshop series hosted by 100Knoxville.
