New airline at McGhee Tyson could open lanes to new business

McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville announced Avelo Airlines will be joining the airport's team.

Avelo Airlines will be the sixth airline company to join McGhee Tyson Airport. The airport announced the news around noon on Tuesday.

The airline is starting with just one location, which will be direct from Knoxville to New Haven, Connecticut. The routes will begin to fly on May 9th on Thursdays and Sundays. According to a press release by  Avelo, the company is offering introductory rates on one-way fares that will start as low as $62.

With the addition of these new routes, Avelo will offer more nonstop routes to Connecticut than any other airline operating in the state.

Avelo is a relatively new airline. While many airlines struggled to stay afloat during and after the pandemic, Avelo took its first flight on April 28, 2021. Since then, the company has flown over 4 million Customers on over 30,000 flights. It services 47 destinations in 23 states and Puerto Rico. The airline prides itself on being low-cost, nonstop, small-airport-focused, and convenient for travelers.

“We are excited to offer Southern Connecticut residents even more travel options with the addition of Atlanta, Charlotte, Knoxville, and Destin. Whether visiting friends and family or enjoying a leisurely vacation, Avelo offers time and money-saving convenience for Connecticut travelers. With 21 nonstop destinations, including eight Florida cities, flying from Tweed Airport is easier and more affordable than ever. Additionally, when you consider our industry-leading reliability and caring Soul of Service, it is clear why almost 2 million people have flown Avelo at Tweed since 2021,” said the Chairman and CEO of Avelo Airlines, Andrew Levy.
