The facility is part of the Station 41 Biotech Commercialization Hub that also includes an accelerator, venture studio, and dedicated fund.

Southern Research marked the official opening of its Station 41 Biotech Incubator at a ribbon cutting last week.
One of four programs that make up the newly launched Station 41 Biotech Commercialization Hub, the incubator provides wet lab space and office space, shared lab equipment, and services to support biotech start-up growth. It is located in a newly renovated space on Southern Research’s campus on Birmingham’s Southside.
“In the past, Birmingham has lost companies and jobs to other markets because we did not have available commercial wet lab space,” said Josh Carpenter, Chief Executive Officer of Southern Research. “With this incubator, we are beginning to meet this need. Under the same roof, we are also providing early stage biotech and pharma companies with unique access to our renowned drug discovery and development capabilities here at Southern Research.”
In addition to their own office and lab space, companies in the incubator have preferred access to Southern Research screening facilities, and they are able to connect with staff experts who can help them move their product forward.
The incubator space is a part of Southern Research’s Station 41 biotech commercialization hub, which also includes the Accelerator, the Venture Studio, and the Therapeutics Development Fund. All exist to help biotech start-ups with funding, expertise, and resources.

If you are in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, take note. Start-ups who want to pitch at the inaugural “Charleston AI Summit” have until February 23 to apply. Twelve will be selected to do so at the event set for March 27 and 28 at the Sottile Theatre at The College of Charleston. It is organized by Dig South.

“Techstars Impact powered by Cox Enterprises,” the Atlanta-based accelerator, has announced its 2024 cohort that includes a wide range of companies focused on making positive impacts on underrepresented groups, underserved communities, and social responsibility.
“Bringing together a well-rounded group of high-quality businesses increases our chances of solving some of the world’s biggest challenges,” said Tim Dorr, Managing Director. “We sorted through more than 1,000 applications to find the best, for-profit, mission-driven companies. This class represents businesses that offer new solutions for tackling a variety of problem areas.”
The focus areas of the 2024 class include accessibility, women’s health, education, corporate impact, and social belonging and equity. These teams will now embark on a three-month rapid acceleration and growth journey for their businesses and themselves. A key cornerstone of the program is one-on-one mentorship provided by people from Cox Enterprises and the broader Techstars network. In addition to the thousands of hours of individualized support from mentors, the program will help with network-building, education, and opportunity creation.

From Troy, AL:
In a landmark initiative funded by the U,S. Department of Agriculture, Troy University is setting a new standard in entrepreneurial education with the launch of its Entrepreneurship Bootcamp. Inspired by Notre Dame University’s model, the program is making history as the largest of its kind in the nation, being run simultaneously in three cities by a single organization, said Juliana Bolivar, Director of the Small Business Development Center at Troy.
The six-week bootcamp will be held in Phenix City, Daleville and Troy beginning in February. One of the unique aspects of the program will be that on-site childcare and meals will be provided to participants. The program culminates with a significant networking event at Troy University, where entrepreneurs from the three cities can establish vital business connections and explore collaborative ventures.
