U News | Youngstown State secures $1.9 million through America Makes

ORNL's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility is one of the collaborators on the effort.

From Youngstown State University:

The University has been awarded $1.9 million through America Makes to investigate the repair process for tooling using an additive/subtractive (hybrid) process technology. This project is a continuation of the hub-and-spoke consortium on hybrid manufacturing that has been active in the Youngstown, OH area for the last several years.

Other project participants include the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; The University of Texas at El Paso; The Georgia Institute of Technology; and The Youngstown Business Incubator. The team will investigate different hybrid technologies based on wire, powder, or a combination of both to repair metallic parts and tooling of interest to the industrial sector.

“This grant will allow the Youngstown area to remain an integral participant in the national effort to incorporate advanced manufacturing platforms in real-world challenges and applications,” said Pedro Cortes, Professor of Chemical Engineering, who will lead the effort for Youngstown State.

America Makes is the nation’s leading public-private partnership for additive manufacturing (AM) technology and education. Its members from industry, academia, government, workforce, and economic development organizations, work together to accelerate the adoption of AM and the nation’s global manufacturing competitiveness. Founded in 2012 as the Department of Defense’s national manufacturing innovation institute for AM and the first of the Manufacturing USA network, America Makes is managed by the not-for-profit National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM).

From Washington University:

Washington University in St. Louis and Deerfield Management, a health-care investment firm, have announced the launch of VeritaScience, a new private R&D collaboration designed to advance the discovery, clinical development, and commercialization of promising therapeutic and diagnostic candidates with potential to benefit human health.

To support projects that originate from the collaboration, Deerfield has committed up to $130 million over the next 10 years, along with functional expertise, through the newly formed company. Washington University investigators will have the opportunity to work with Deerfield’s internal team, which has expertise across the drug development continuum from discovery through commercialization.

VeritaScience is named to honor Washington University’s motto “Per Veritatem Vis,” which means “Strength Through Truth” in Latin.

Washington University is known worldwide for its innovative research programs in the medical sciences aimed at improving human health. The university currently is ranked #7 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among U.S. universities, with $633 million received in the 2023 federal fiscal year.

From North Carolina State University:

The University officially opened its NC State Gaming and Esports Lab in mid-January. The facility features 35 gaming personal computers and four console stations that will support the NC State Esports program.

The North Carolina General Assembly allocated funds to launch the esports program last year, and students in the existing Esports Club and other partners across the university worked together to build the pilot gaming space. In the long term, $12 million of the funds allocated by the legislators will be used to build the NC State Esports Arena, which is slated to open in 2026. It promises to be one of the largest, most immersive collegiate esports facilities in the nation.

As most readers probably know, esports are electronic sports that involve playing video games, often at a high skill level. Many games involve intricate teamwork, and gameplay can be broadcast through livestreams on the web. Around the world, esports have a huge fan base and are a key part of the ever-growing gaming industry.

The Lab is open to NC State students, faculty and staff who are interested in gaming at any level of experience or playstyle.

Also from North Carolina State University:

Kevin D. Howell, Vice Chancellor for External Affairs, Partnerships, and Economic Development since 2018, has accepted a new position as Chief External Affairs Officer for UNC Health and the UNC School of Medicine. His last day at the university is February 1. Howell will be succeeded by Julie Smith, who has served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs, Partnerships, and Economic Development  since 2019. Her appointment is contingent on the approval of the NC State Board of Trustees.

From West Virginia University:

West Virginia University Assistant Professor is creating powerful, unconventional artificial intelligence tools that can reimagine the sustainability of chemical manufacturing. Yuhe Tian said she believes innovations to current chemical manufacturing processes, including transitions focused on energy sustainability, can be driven by “quantum AI,” or machine learning on a cutting-edge quantum computer that uses subatomic particles to store information and solve problems.

With $240,000 in funding from the National Science Foundation, Tian is launching a two-year project that will harness quantum intelligence to innovate the design of environmentally friendly chemical plants.

“My team will take a first-of-its-kind approach to using quantum machine learning to identify novel, optimal, sustainable chemical process designs,” said Tian. “We want to find out how the manufacture of chemicals like hydrogen and ammonia can be greener, primarily in terms of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption. Instead of heavily relying on human expertise, our framework will systematically generate outside-the-box process design solutions.”

From the University of Virginia:

CAV Angels, the investment group composed of University of Virginia (UVA) alumni, students and friends, has announced several transitions in its leadership group. Scott Ukrop, Managing Director of Richmond early stage venture firm NRV, is joining CAV Angels as its new Board Chair, and Rich Diemer is the organization’s new Managing Director. The investment group describes its goal as “elevating the entrepreneurial ecosystem for UVA alumni by educating, connecting, funding, and mentoring the extended UVA start-up community.”
