News & Notes | Governor Lee named States’ Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission

The Knoxville Technology Council holding free workshop titled "The Future of AI is Web3."

From Washington, DC but with Tennessee Implications:

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has been elected by his fellow Appalachian governors to serve as the 2024 Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) States’ Co-Chair. As part of ARC’s unique federal-state partnership structure, the States’ Co-Chair works collaboratively with the ARC Federal Co-Chair and fellow Appalachian state governors to invest in economic and community growth across the region’s 423 counties in 13 states. In addition to advancing ARC investments across the region, the States’ Co-Chair also hosts ARC’s annual conference. Governor Lee will serve as ARC’s 71st States’ Co-Chair and the first from Tennessee since 2016, but the seventh Tennessean since 1965 to hold the position.

From Knoxville:

As artificial intelligence (AI) is reaching the pinnacle of its hypercycle, so are the fears of what AI could do. But what is not considered is how the internet is evolving. The future of the Web, a.k.a. Web3, has the capability to authenticate identity and verify data in ways that could help keep AI in check. Put another way, Web3 domesticates data in the wild to prevent AI from feeding off everything and anything.

In a “Tech Talk” scheduled for the evening of January 18 in downtown Knoxville, Gary Jackson, Director of AI & Distributed Ledger Technologies at CGI, will explain how the only thing that could make AI dangerous is if humans allow Web3 not to happen. He will explore how the new Web3 landscape could negate fears about AI technologies and help incubate innovation.

The free event, hosted by the Knoxville Technology Council, begins with a happy hour at 5:30 p.m. and the program starting at 6 p.m. at CGI’s offices, 900 South Gay Street, Suite 1000. To register, click here.
