U News | Virginia Tech names Interim Executive Director at Apex Center

Princeton University launching new AI hub in collaboration with State of New Jersey and its Economic Development Authority.

From the University of Cincinnati:

In what the University described as “a bold and visionary move,” its Center for Entrepreneurship took a delegation of students from the College of Engineering and Applied Science to the heart of technological innovation: San Francisco. The trip’s highlight was the series of meetings and engagements with alums who have successfully carved career paths in the competitive tech landscape, and the first stop was at Apple to connect with Sam Jeyatheva, Manager of Supply Chain Solutions and a Carl H. Lindner College of Business graduate. The trip acted as a catalyst for fostering networking and mentorship opportunities.

From Virginia Tech University:

Sean Collins has been named as Interim Executive Director of the Apex Center for Entrepreneurs. He joined the Center in 2015 and was serving as Managing Director of the Startup Hokies program before the promotion to succeed Derick Maggard. Housed in Pamplin College of Business, the Apex Center provides interdisciplinary programs and support to students from across the university who want to become entrepreneurs or learn more about starting a business.

Maggard co-founded the Apex Center in 2014 and is its only Executive Director.

From Michigan State University:

The University’s Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation has announced it will offer a “Special Topics in Entrepreneurship — Entrepreneurship for the Social Good” course this spring. The curriculum bridges entrepreneurship and community impact, equipping tomorrow’s innovators to tackle social challenges profitably and sustainably.

According to the announcement, social entrepreneurship merges economic, social, and environmental objectives, epitomized by the mantra “doing well by doing good.” Icons like Blake Mycoskie of TOMS Shoes exemplify this, transforming customer purchases into acts of charity and global awareness campaigns. Unlike non-profits or corporations with Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, social ventures integrate societal impact into their core operations.

From Princeton University:

A new artificial intelligence (AI) hub in New Jersey will leverage state funding, the state’s premier university, and private-sector partnerships to help advance the responsible development of AI technologies and tools there. New Jersey officials have been exploring the potential of AI for years. Earlier this year, the state established an Artificial Intelligence Task Force to study the rapidly emerging technology and make recommendations for the state to use the tools ethically. The state has also released a policy to guide the use of generative AI by state employees.

The new hub, announced in December by Governor Phil Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber aims to help to spur responsible innovation around the technology, drive job growth and economic development, and guide government entities on AI implementation. The third announced partner is the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.
