Florida, Georgia top this list of most entrepreneurial states

Rankings are based on a variety of factors. California places eighth on the list.

Another day, and another study. This one, unlike another recent post, finds the South doing well.

According to a new listing from The Digital Project, Florida and Georgia rank #1 and #2 as the most entrepreneurial in the country respectively. The rankings were based on a variety of indicators including:

About the Sunshine State, The Digital Project writes: “Florida has the highest percentage of the population who have started a business (0.61 percent), with 86 percent of those starting one out of choice rather than necessity, which could mean being unemployed or requiring another income stream to support oneself. These start-ups have the highest number of jobs created in the first year, with 6.53 jobs created for every 1,000 of the population. With 13,238 small businesses per 100,000 of the population, this is the most in any state. Floridians have an entrepreneurial mindset that doesn’t only benefit themselves but their communities with the jobs that they create.”

Of the Peach State, the analysis is as follows: “Georgia is in second place, with 10,871 small businesses per 100,000 of the population – there is a clear entrepreneurial drive. This is supported by the second-highest percentage of the population that has started a new business (0.47 percent). Georgians also have a high search interest on Google for ‘how to start a business’.”

Others in the top 10, which apparently is as far as the rankings went, are: Michigan (#3), Oklahoma (#4), Montana (#5), Wyoming (#6), Colorado (#7), California (#8), Idaho (#9), and Texas (#10).
