Covenant Health Fort Loudoun Breaking Ground
Covenant Health Fort Loudoun has initiated the construction of its new Brethen Foundation Advanced Care Wing, a 50-bed expansion funded in part by a generous donation from the Brethen Foundation. The project, celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony on November 3, 2023, will add 26 new patient rooms for intensive and intermediate care.
The construction, managed by The Christman Company, is expected to be completed by late spring 2025, expanding the medical center’s square footage from 89,245 to 108,245 and allowing for the expansion of the emergency department. The hospital is actively hiring for various roles and recruiting volunteers to support this expansion, reflecting its commitment to providing excellent and compassionate care to the community.
Malibu Boats, LLC invest $75 Million
Malibu Boats, a subsidiary of Malibu Boats, Inc., is investing $75 million to expand its manufacturing operations in East Tennessee, creating 770 new jobs in Roane County over the next five years. The expansion involves locating some of its Cobalt boat brand production in an existing facility at the Roane Regional Business and Technology Park in Lenoir City. This new plant will boost the company’s production capabilities to meet growing global demand.
Since 2019, the Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) has supported over 50 economic development projects in East Tennessee, resulting in around 7,200 job commitments and $2 billion in capital investment. Production and hiring for the new Cobalt boats facility are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2024.

Knoxville-Based Company Wins National Award
Johnson Architecture received national recognition from Spaces4Learning for their outstanding designs of Lakeway Christian Academy and the University of Tennessee’s Rocky Top Dining Hall. Notably, the Lakeway Christian Academy design in White Pine, Tennessee, was honored with the grand prize for K-12 new construction in the Education Design Showcase. The Rocky Top Dining Hall received the Project of Distinction Award for higher education new construction.
Lakeway Christian Academy boasts a 202,740-square-foot complex catering to K-12 students’ needs, combining modern classrooms, a performing arts center, and sports facilities, seamlessly integrated into the landscape.

Gay Street Testing Vehicle Free Weekend
The City of Knoxville is opening up Gay Street to pedestrians as part of a pilot project. For four weekends, the 400 block of Gay Street from Wall Avenue to Union Avenue will be opened up to create a new vibrant public space that is free of vehicles. The hope is that it will benefit downtown businesses with more foot traffic, and help make downtown more accessible for pedestrians.
“This is not a new idea. Cities across the world like Paris, New York, Nashville, and New Orleans are taking back their streets and turning them into safe spaces for pedestrians. We are excited to see how residents and visitors utilize this space during these pilot weekends,” Mayor Indya Kincannon said in a press release.
The trial weekends for the vehicle free streets are:
