Stories of Technology, Innovation, & Entrepreneurship in the Southeast

The Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Development (ORIEP) at the University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville is accepting applications from those interested in participating in the three-part Fall edition of the “I-Corps Regional Workshop” series that begins on October 19 and wraps up November 13.

The kick-off will be in-person from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EDT October 19 in the Seminar Room of the Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing at the UT Research Park, and the finale will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST November 13 in the Seminar Room at the Student Union on campus. There will also be a virtual check-in session on November 1 for participants.

“This entrepreneurial training program provides a great opportunity to explore technology commercialization, conduct multiple customer interviews, and gain insight into potential markets for your technology,” says Rob Coleman, ORIEP’s Director of Entrepreneurship & New Ventures, who is spearheading planning.

Offered under the auspices of the new National Science Foundation-funded Mid-South I-Corps Hub coordinated by Vanderbilt University’s The Wond’ry, the program is designed to enhance the transformation of inventions to impact through interactive training that includes three workshops, weekly office hours, and at least 20 customer interviews over a three-week period. The curriculum integrates scientific inquiry and industrial discovery in an inclusive, data-driven culture. Through I-Corps training, researchers can reduce the time to translate a promising idea from the laboratory to the marketplace.

Those familiar with the I-Corps program know that much of the focus is on customer discovery, value proposition, and development of a “Business Model Canvas” for the specific technology the faculty member, researcher, or student is interested in pursuing.
