New global venture fund is focusing on mobility sector innovations

Assembly Ventures has an interest in battery technology, clean energy solutions, climate tech, supply chain optimization, and automotive production.

Assembly Ventures, a venture capital group founded by Detroit and Berlin investors, has closed fundraising for its inaugural $76 million to invest in mobility sector innovations.

Founded in 2020, the group is the brainchild of mobility operators Chris Thomas and Jessica Robinson, who previously founded the Detroit Mobility Lab and the Michigan Mobility Institute, and Felix Scheuffelen, a Germany-based investor who co-founded Beyond1435, an innovation platform. The new fund secured investment from a range of individuals and companies including Rocket Mortgage Founder Dan Gilbert and Jeep maker Stellantis NV.

The initial fund is focused on early investment rounds — seed and Series A and B — and entrepreneurs driving transformation across land, air, sea, and space in the U.S. and Europe. It’s especially interested in battery technology, clean energy solutions, climate tech, supply chain optimization, and automotive production, encouraged by public policy agendas, according to this news release.

“We are proud to have reached this significant investment milestone, which stands as a huge testament to our team’s credentials, investment thesis, and unwavering efforts over the past few years in a challenging market environment,” Thomas said. “We believe that the world is on the cusp of a new geopolitical era where the West will increasingly choose to de-risk its heavy reliance on China. In the coming decades, we anticipate a radical reshaping of economies, especially in automotive and mobility technology across air, land, sea, and space, along with their respective supply chains.”
