Axios plots new business applications

Data shows the Southeastern U.S. is a hotbed of activity, although Tennessee does not show as well as our neighboring states.

Axios, the national online news site that describes itself as addressing the need for “smarter, more efficient coverage of the topics shaping the fast-changing world,” published an article about business starts based on U.S. Census Bureau and Internal Revenue Service data.

The conclusion is not surprising. “The Southeastern U.S. is a hotbed of new business activity, home to nine of the top 10 major metro areas with the most new business applications per 1,000 residents last year,” the analysis revealed. Miami, with 40.9 applications per 1,000 residents, topped the list followed by Atlanta (31.3) and Orlando (28.7).

If you look at the Axios interactive map that shows every county in the country, Tennessee does not show as well as some of our neighboring states. Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County led the state with 21.6 new business applications per 1,000 residents followed closely by Shelby County (Memphis) at 21.3. Hamilton County (Chattanooga) came in third at 13.6, and Knox County placed fourth at 11.5 applications per 1,000 residents.

Axios also publishes local editions including one in Nashville.
