News & Notes | A little more than two weeks until the “Nuclear Opportunities Workshop”

Mike Paulus fills long vacant Director of Partnerships position at ORNL; Jennifer Caldwell succeeds him as Director of Technology Transfer.

From Oak Ridge and Knoxville:

Five keynote speakers have been announced for the fifth annual “Nuclear Opportunities Workshop” scheduled for August 1 and 2 at the Hilton Knoxville Airport. They are:

  • Chuck Fleischmann, U.S. Representative from Tennessee’s Third Congressional District;
  • Michael Goff, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy;
  • Jeff Lyash, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tennessee Valley Authority;
  • Stuart McWhorter, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development; and
  • Deniece Thomas, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

In addition, panels are planned on these topics:

  • Nuclear Advanced Reactor Development Status and Lessons Learned;
  • Nuclear Fuels;
  • Nuclear Fusion Development and Progress;
  • Nuclear Workforce, Training and Technology Advancements;
  • Nuclear Cleanup and Environmental Justice;
  • Nuclear and Energy Security; and
  • Nuclear Medicine and Radioisotopes.

From Knoxville:

The next Made For Knoxville meetup is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. July 31 at the Hey Bear Cafe, 9036 Middlebrook Pike.  Hosted by the Knoxville Entrepreneur Center, the event is described as “a perfect, low-stakes way to meet other entrepreneurs here in Knoxville. From Oak Ridge:

Mike Paulus, the longtime Director of Technology Transfer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been named Director of Partnerships. In that role, his responsibilities include his previous area as well as strategic partnerships, the “Innovation Crossroads” program, and other areas.

Prior to rejoining ORNL in 2009, Paulus served as Vice President of Product Management with Siemens Molecular Imaging, where he and his team were responsible for defining the product portfolio for this world-wide market leader in clinical PET and SPECT diagnostic imaging. He also served as Co-Founder and CEO of ImTek Inc, an ORNL spin-out and market leader in laboratory animal x-ray CT imaging before its acquisition by CTI Inc. and Siemens. The position was established in 2007 and had been vacant for several years.

Succeeding Paulus as Director of Technology Transfer is Jennifer Caldwell, another longtime member of the commercialization team.
