News Roundup | Coffee and co-working

Here’s your weekly roundup of business news throughout Knoxville.

Seed Co. Coffee opens in former Golden Roast location

The old church building on Sutherland that Golden Roast Coffee renovated to become a coffee shop is now home to a new coffee shop.

Seed Coffee Co. opens in the 2558 Sutherland Ave space this weekend. It’s a “Knoxville-based coffeehouse providing sustainable solutions to poverty through coffee,” according to its website. Seed Coffee said 25 percent of its profits are donated to SEED International to support Haitian and Dominican entrepreneurs.

“We partner with Café Kreyol to ensure farmers are paid more than a living wage, are supported through co-ops and training to grow their business, and are able to reinvest in their farms and their families. We believe that coffee can and should be used for good,” they state on their website.

Golden Roast relocated down the street to the Cherokee Mills building in January.

SmashCity Burgers to move into OliBea’s downtown space

Downtown staple OliBea is closing, leaving a prime South Central Avenue location up for grabs.

SmashCity Knoxville, a local burger shop with a current location in Marble City Market, announced Friday it will be moving out of its current spot into OliBea’s old space.

“We’re thrilled to share the exciting news of our upcoming brick-and-mortar location: 211 South Central Street!” the restaurant posted on Instagram. “Keep an eye out for further updates as we progress. We express heartfelt gratitude for our valuable time at Marble City Market. You can enjoy our mouthwatering SmashCity burgers at MCM until July 29th!”

Coffee shop and coworking space bring new life to old Broadway building

If you’ve driven on Broadway in the 4th & Gill area lately, it’s hard to miss the three-story empty brick building now painted white, blue, orange, and pink with the words “co-working” and “coffee” running down the side.

This no-longer-empty building will soon be home to two new businesses.

The first is Partial Coffee & Wine, a small takeaway cafe serving specialty coffee and wine opening this summer.

The second is Knox Base, a business space tailored for small businesses, offering flex office spaces and amenities. Knox Base’s original goal was to open in the fall of 2022, no word yet on their updated timeline.
