UTC’s new space for CIE offers many opportunities for student entrepreneurs

By Tom Ballard, Chief Alliance Officer, PYA

We were in Chattanooga last week and had the opportunity to get a quick tour of the new space housing the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). Our hosts were Libby Santin, CIE Director, and Thomas Lyons, holder of the Clarence E. Harris Chair of Excellence in Business and Entrepreneurship at UTC.

CIE occupies a 5,700-square foot section of the recently renovated James R. Mapp Building on Eighth Street just across McCallie Avenue from the main part of the campus. Santin, pictured here with Lyons, told us the building formerly housed state offices.

Much of the square footage is allocated to a very open and flexible room where events such as the “Hatch It” student pitch competition are held. There are also small rooms for group projects, one larger classroom, and a maker space.

These are pictures that we captured during the tour.
